Detectives Arrest Suspect in September Homicide in Temple Hills

The Homicide Unit arrested a suspect in connection with a homicide in Temple Hills in September. The suspect is 26-year-old John Hazelwood of the 3500 block of Brothers Place in Southeast DC. He’s charged with the fatal shooting of 52-year-old George Barnes of Southern Avenue in Temple Hills.

On September 8th at about 11:00 am, officers were called to the 2500 block of Southern Avenue for a shooting. The officers found Barnes suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital where he died several hours later.

The preliminary investigation reveals the suspect shot the victim just inside the victim’s apartment building and then fled the area. During the course of the investigation, Hazelwood was developed as the suspect. Detectives are working to determine a motive.

Hazelwood is charged with first and second degree murder, assault and weapons charges. He’s in custody of the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status.
